Industrial metals include commodities that are used in a wide variety of applications, including numerous construction and manufacturing businesses. This category of commodity includes dozens of individual natural resources, with the most commonly-used including Aluminum, Copper, Lead, Nickel, Steel, Tin, Zinc.
Because metals are used in home construction and various manufacturing applications, these commodities tend to exhibit a strong correlation to global economy; when demand for raw materials climbs, the pulse of the global economy quickens. In addition, increases in metal prices often trickle down through the products in which they are used, making this asset class a potentially effective tool for combating inflation.
Copper for example is a leading industrial metal that is often called the “metal with a Ph.D. in economics” or “doctor copper” because it tells you the “health of the global economy” due to its widespread use in construction, which makes its price very sensitive to global economic trends.

Today, copper and its alloys have a variety of uses that impact our daily lives. To give some examples, the average U.S.-built automobile contains 50 pounds of copper, and the average U.S.-built home contains 400 pounds of copper. The five major uses of copper are: 1) building construction, 2) electrical and electronics, 3) general consumer products, 4) industrial machinery and equipment, and 5) transportation equipment. In addition, copper is antimicrobial, and may be used in personal products such as socks, as well as handles used in hospitals, and tables used in kitchen restaurants.

Steel is an alloy of iron with a carbon content that can range from 0.03% to 1,075% of its composition, depending on its grade. Steel can be recycled indefinitely without losing their attributes Those facts facilitates its production on large scale. Its variety and availability makes it suitable for numerous uses as the construction of machinery, tools, buildings and public works, aeronautics, automotive, medical equipment etc. contributing to the technological development of industrialized societies, as no material can match it on resistance to impact or fatigue.

Aluminium is a silvery-white, lightweight metal. It is soft and malleable. It is used in a huge variety of products including cans, foils, kitchen utensils, window frames, beer kegs and airplane parts. This is because of its particular properties. It has low density, is non-toxic, has a high thermal conductivity, has excellent corrosion resistance and can be easily cast, machined and formed. It is also non-magnetic and non-sparking. It is the second most malleable metal and the sixth most ductile. It is often used as an alloy because aluminium itself is not particularly strong. Alloys with copper, manganese, magnesium and silicon are lightweight but strong. They are very important in the construction of airplanes and other forms of transport. It is a good electrical conductor and is often used in electrical transmission lines. It is cheaper than copper and weight for weight is almost twice as good a conductor.

Iron ore is usually smelted to produce pig iron (metallic iron), which is used to make steel. It is for this reason iron is perhaps one of the most important metals used in developed and developing economies. Steel is used to make automobiles, locomotives, ships, beams used in buildings, furniture, paper clips, tools, reinforcing rods for concrete, bicycles, and thousands of other items. It is the most-used metal by both tonnage and purpose.
